Eco Sculpture

Rescued fabrics are natural dyed with acorns or black walnuts then eco and rust dyed to create rich colors reminiscent of the colors of the African bush. This fabric is hand stitched into “poufs”, these are embellished to create complex and richly textured sculptures inspired by the natural world.

Inspired by natural forms of rock strata, tree roots and organic growths, and the colors of the African earth where I grew up. I am fascinated by the aging process and the beauty in decay. Eco dyed rescued fabric is made into "poufs" which are embellished and then rust dyed. These are assembled and stitched onto a hardware cloth form. The assembled sculpture is adorned with manmade jewelry and fabric flowers. An interaction of nature and man to create beauty! The rescued trinkets all bring their own histories to the piece.

Eco dyed and rust dyed repurposed fabric, repurposed PET fibers, hardware cloth, embroidery floss, wool, wire, beads, wire, washers, vintage costume jewelry, basket cord, sequins, silk flowers.
Individual poufs are stitched and embellished, they are then rust dyed. When I have a large pile of poufs I assemble the sculpture and stitch them onto a hardware cloth form. The curly cords are basket cord covered in natural and eco dyed fabric.

My sculptures are part of a trilogy named for the Gorgon sisters who in Greek mythology, have the hair of living, venomous snakes. Stheno is the oldest, and Medusa is the youngest, named in the order in which they were created. I work intuitively, eco and rust dying rescued fabrics transforming them through multiple repetitious processes to produce beautiful rich earthy colors. “Poufs” are stuffed and embellished, sewn together and attached to a wire form.
Individual “poufs” are comforting to hold and very tactile. I cover bas¬ket cord with cloth and then further rust dye it to produce the writhing “snakes” that make the pieces come alive.
Finished sculptures are complex, organic and teaming with emotion

"Poufs" are attached to hardware cloth covered with eco dyed rescued fabric. Vintage gold frame. This piece can be rotated 360 degrees for hanging - landscape or portrait.
